Louis Dreyfus Co (LDC) inaugurated its new grain storage facility recently in Multan, Pakistan, adding about 40,000 tons of storage capacity to the company’s logistics capabilities in South Punjab, a major wheat producing region.
“Pakistan is an important market for grains and a key destination for LDC in South Asia, where growing populations and economies rely on strong, connected agricultural supply chains and trade flows,” said Rubens Marques, Head of South and Southeast Asia.
“This investment in Pakistan strengthens our presence in the domestic market as well as our ability to meet evolving customer needs in the region, in line with LDC’s global strategy to further reinforce its core merchandizing capabilities.”
Pakistan is one of South Asia’s major agricultural markets, and among the world’s largest producers and consumers of wheat, with demand underpinned by a growing population of more than 250 million, LDC said.
Wheat production in marketing year 2026-27 is forecast at 29.6 million tons, 2% higher than last year due to an increase in area to 9.3 million ha, according to the Foreign Agricultural Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
Wheat is one of the mainstay agricultural crops in Pakistan, with 80% of farmers growing it.
Since establishing its presence in Pakistan in 2010, LDC has built up its position in the country’s cotton, grains, oilseeds, pulses, rice and sugar markets, including a strong position in wheat.
Muhammad Danyal, Country Head for Pakistan and Head of Grains & Oilseeds for Pakistan, said Pakistan’s strong agricultural base and growing demand for grains continue to create opportunities for LDC in the country.
“Investing in logistics infrastructure enhances our service to both suppliers and customers, supporting more efficient and resilient supply chains as Pakistan’s grains sector continues to develop, while contributing to local job creation,” Mr Danyal said.
With its headquarters in Rotterdam, Netherlands, LDC is a merchant and processor of agricultural goods, with activities spanning the entire value chain. It originates, processes and transports approximately 100 million tons of products annually and is active in over 100 countries.
