Addressing Feed Analysis vs. Biomarkers in Mycotoxin Risk Assessment

Antwerp Gears Up for an Open Session to Shed Light on the Tension Between Feed Analysis and Biomarkers in Mycotoxin Risk Assessment

Innovad, a leading global provider of innovative solutions for animal nutrition and health, is proud to announce an upcoming event that promises to bring clarity to the complex world of mycotoxin risk assessment. The event, scheduled for October 9th, 2023, at Chocolate Nation’s Expo Room in Antwerp, will focus on the tension between traditional feed analysis and the emerging biomarker-based approach in assessing mycotoxin risks.

Traditionally, raw material and feed analysis have been the primary tools used to evaluate mycotoxin exposure in animal feed. Established upper limits for a few mycotoxins have provided some guidance based on single toxin exposure doses, but the true impact of mycotoxins on animal performance, especially in the context of multi-toxin exposure and the efficacy of different mitigation products, has remained elusive. The lack of viable alternatives has resulted in limited questioning of mycotoxin feed limits.

In recent years, the analysis of mycotoxins in animal tissues, particularly blood, has led to the discovery of biomarkers that correlate with specific mycotoxin exposure levels. While the correlation between these biomarkers and animal health and performance is still evolving, initial attempts have shown promise in addressing mycotoxin challenges.

The tension arises from the disparity between clear-cut feed limits and the interpretation of blood analysis results for multiple mycotoxins, which lack a straightforward correlation.

The event, taking place during the World Mycotoxin Forum (WMF), will feature an open discussion session that brings together industry experts to illuminate the tension between these two assessment methods and their implications for evaluating animal performance.
