Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions Achieved at Perstorp’s Waspik Site
A Major Milestone in Low-Footprint Production
Perstorp, a leading global specialty chemicals innovator and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia’s PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG), proudly announces that its Animal Nutrition-focused plant in Waspik, the Netherlands, has officially reduced its direct emissions (Scope 1 & 2) to zero for 2024. This achievement makes Waspik the first Perstorp location to reach this exceptional milestone.
Key Steps Toward Sustainability
To achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions, Perstorp Waspik implemented several strategic initiatives:
- Transition to electric forklift trucks replacing fossil fuel-based alternatives.
- Conversion to LED lighting for enhanced energy efficiency.
- Switch from natural gas to biogas for heating purposes.
- 100% renewable electricity usage throughout the facility.
Heating and electricity consumption are the two largest factors influencing Scope 1 and 2 emissions. With these measures in place, Perstorp Waspik continues to explore further steps to minimize its environmental footprint.
A Commitment to Sustainable Animal Production
Ian Atterbury, Senior Vice President of Perstorp Animal Nutrition, emphasized the company’s commitment:
“Perstorp is dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of its business activities. I am proud that within Perstorp Animal Nutrition, we continue to accelerate our sustainability targets and achieve meaningful results. Our Waspik site reaching zero Scope 1 & 2 emissions is a major step forward. We aim to be a true partner in sustainable animal production, helping customers not only through performance and health support but also by reducing the environmental footprint of our products.”
Progress Toward Finite Material Neutrality
Anna Berggren, Vice President Sustainability at Perstorp, highlighted the broader vision:
“This is a great achievement and an important milestone. I am very proud that we have our first site with no direct emissions from its production or purchased energy. Every chemical site has unique challenges and opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with access to renewable alternatives being key. We are working intensively to secure sustainable energy and raw materials to reduce both the direct and indirect carbon footprint of our sites and products—supporting our customers and value chains in their ambitions.”
Perstorp is dedicated to becoming Finite Material Neutral and has set science-based reduction targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. By 2030, the company aims to reduce Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 46.2% compared to the 2019 baseline, aligning with the 1.5°C global warming target set by the Paris Agreement.
