Miami hosted the LPN Congress & Expo 2023

The LPN Congress & Expo 2023 is an event that brings together a large part of the Latin American poultry and animal nutrition community.

From October 17 to 19, the latest installment of the “Latin event of the year” occurred at the MACC – Miami Airport Convention Center in Miami, USA. This event was notable for bringing together a substantial segment of the Latin American poultry and animal nutrition community, with a primary focus on delivering presentations, exhibitions, and workshops pertaining to these subjects.

LPN 2023 offered a variety of sessions addressing animal nutrition, including the Mycotoxin Forum and multiple Nutrition Halls. These spaces hosted a sequence of presentations and facilitated open dialogues, with the participation of distinguished industry experts.

Among the notable contributions, the presentation titled “Mycotoxins in animal production: addressing challenges and mitigation” by Dr. Insaf Riahi and Dr. Catalina Nicholls was showcased, underscoring the worldwide importance of mycotoxins as a concern that impacts both animal and human  health.

The experts further highlighted that the climate emergency poses a significant risk for the proliferation of mycotoxins: “It has emerged as a substantial menace to the safety of food and balanced animal feed, as it results in an altered pattern of mycotoxin contamination.” Additionally, they pointed out:

“The anticipated rise in precipitation and temperature in certain regions can create more conducive environmental conditions for the growth of Fusarium spp. Conversely, the more frequent and extended periods of drought can trigger the production of aflatoxins by Aspergillus flavus, both pre and post-harvest.”

On the other hand, “Unmasking the invisible threats of mycotoxins” by MV. MSc. Zoila Naeko Coloma Adaniya provided an overview of the history of mycotoxin research and the impact they have on animal health. Coloma inaugurated the Mycotoxin Forum with this presentation, also addressing cytotoxicity and oxidative stress. Finally, she highlighted:

“Preventive and control measures, such as proper storage, harvesting at the right times, the use of high-quality grains, regular grain analysis, or the use of proven-effective products, are vital to minimize the risks of contamination by these toxins and promote the success of our production process.”
