Today’s sows are designed for more – more piglets, a longer lifetime in production. It’s appropriate then that NOVUS, with its Made of More™ approach, will debut a new book on this topic next month.
NOVUS will launch its latest book, Nutrition and Production Strategies for Today’s Sows, on September 5. The book features 12 chapters carefully curated to serve as a reference guide, highlighting best practices and considerations for sow production.
This is the intelligent nutrition company’s second book focused on sows; Nutrition of Hyperprolific Sows was published in 2019.
“The response we received from the first book was outstanding,” says Marisol Castillo, executive manager of global swine solutions at NOVUS. “The primary focus of that book was nutrition. We knew there was much more to share about modern sows – their physiology, how environment affects performance, and insights on the gilt phase. There’s just so much research out there that we wanted to share.”
Key topics covered in the new book include sow and gilt nutrition, genetics, breeding, lactation, farrowing, and mortality.
The book’s contributors include experts from leading companies and respected universities:
Bruno A. N. Silva, Ph.D., Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG/ICA)
Laura Greiner, Ph.D. and Dalton Humphrey, Ph.D., Iowa State University
Austin Putz, Ph.D., Hendrix Genetics
Ioannis Mavromichalis, Ph.D., and Efstratia Papanikou, Ph.D., Ariston Nutrition Consulting International
Teresa Mogas, Ph.D., University of Barcelona
Antonio Palomo Yagüe, Ph.D., Swine Technical Manager, Archer Daniels Midland Company
Carlos Piñeiro, Ph.D., Animal Data Analytics SL, and Yuzo Koketsu, Ph.D., Meiji University
Timothy Safranski, Ph.D., University of Missouri
Luis Sanjoaquin Romero, DVM, Sigmavet/ThinkinPig
Déborah Temple, Ph.D. and team at Animal Welfare Education Center (AWEC), Campus de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Hans H. Stein, Ph.D., and Su A. Lee, Ph.D., Department of Animal Sciences, University of Illinois
Brad Lawrence, Ph.D., NOVUS
The book’s co-coordinator is Carlos Lasagna, DVM, of Martini S.p.A.
“Because so many things can impact sow health and performance it was important to seek perspectives from a variety of sources,” says Castillo. “The chapters include detailed research, new ways of thinking, and first-hand accounts from people who have dedicated their lives to this industry.”
A free digital version of the book will be available for download starting September 5. Those who want to receive it directly in their inbox can sign up on the waitlist.
The first NOVUS sow book is still available as a free digital download on the company website. NOVUS also published the poultry book, Breeder Management and Nutrition: Moving the Industry Forward, in 2022, which is also available for digital download.
NOVUS provides intelligent nutrition solutions that help animals reach their full potential. The company portfolio includes bis-chelated trace minerals, enzymes, organic acids, eubiotics, and methionine sources that are Made of More™.
