New High-Yield Corn Variety Boosts Agricultural Productivity in Peru

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) in Peru has introduced a breakthrough in agricultural innovation with the release of the new hard yellow corn variety, INIA 608 – ALLIMASARA. Developed by the National Institute of Agricultural Innovation (INIA), this new maize strain promises to revolutionize farming practices and enhance productivity for agricultural producers across the country.

With its superior genetic traits, the INIA 608 – ALLIMASARA variety is expected to increase productivity per hectare by an impressive 40%. This significant boost in yield capacity represents a major breakthrough for the agricultural sector and holds great promise for improving the livelihoods of farmers, particularly those engaged in family agriculture.

One of the key advantages of this new corn variety is its remarkable adaptability to different environmental conditions. Capable of producing yields of up to 6 tons per hectare under dryland conditions and 8 tons per hectare under irrigation, the INIA 608 – ALLIMASARA variety demonstrates its resilience and versatility in various agricultural settings.

Moreover, the introduction of this high-yield maize variety is set to significantly enhance economic profitability for agricultural producers. Compared to traditional local varieties, which typically yield between 2 to 4 tons per hectare, the INIA 608 – ALLIMASARA variety offers a substantial increase in yield potential, translating to greater economic returns for farmers.

The development of the INIA 608 – ALLIMASARA variety is the result of extensive research and innovation by specialists from the National Corn Program at the El Porvenir Agricultural Experimental Station in the San Martín region. Through meticulous crossbreeding techniques and leveraging genetic resources from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), researchers have successfully bred a maize variety with superior traits and performance.

Beyond its high yield potential, the INIA 608 – ALLIMASARA variety offers several other benefits to agricultural producers. With its orange-yellow grains and semi-dentate texture, it is well-suited for the production of balanced animal feeds used by the poultry and pig industries. Additionally, its tolerance to adverse environmental conditions, such as rust attack, further enhances its appeal to farmers seeking resilient and high-performing crop varieties.
