Exploring the Future of GMO Corn and Livestock Feed with Dr. Haroldo Silva Rodrigues

In a recent interview with NutriNews International, Dr. Haroldo Silva Rodrigues shared his expertise on the adoption of genetically modified (GMO) corn in Latin America, focusing on the significant role Brazil and Argentina play as major producers. With Brazil cultivating 21 million hectares and Argentina growing 7.5 million hectares, the adoption of GMO corn has already had a notable impact on agricultural productivity and sustainability in the region.

Dr. Silva emphasized the importance of public education in addressing the public opinion challenges surrounding GMO crops. While regions like Brazil and Argentina have embraced the technology, countries such as Mexico and Peru, which are centers of corn diversity, remain more cautious in their adoption. Despite the challenges, Dr. Silva believes that better communication strategies can help improve understanding and foster acceptance of GMOs.

The environmental benefits of GMO corn were also a key point in the discussion. Reduced pesticide use and increased water efficiency were highlighted as major advantages of genetically modified crops. Dr. Silva also touched on the potential of GMOs to aid in biofortification and land degradation reduction, with bio-plastic production and carbon capture being potential offshoots of GMO corn development.

One of the key highlights was the role of university-led research in developing GMO technologies for smaller crops, ensuring that even small-scale farmers can benefit from the advances in genetic technology. Dr. Silva called for more public-private partnerships and university extensions to facilitate this development.

However, with the increased production of GMO crops, there are concerns about GMO contamination in native corn populations and the potential economic impacts of export restrictions from GMO-free regions like Europe. Dr. Silva urged for continued efforts to balance the need for increased productivity with the protection of regional biodiversity and traditional farming practices.
